Ostlie’s Sunnyside Acres presents:
Our 2015 plant of the year – GARLIC !
In the inaugural year of our plant of the year, we would like to introduce you to hardneck garlic. This garlic is a little different than you might be used to. This is because the garlic purchased at a supermarket is a softneck garlic. Here are a few of the differences:
Large but fewer cloves Small but many cloves
Winter hardy Generally planted in warmer regions
Tends to be more spicy Tends to be more mild but some varieties are spicy
Many varieties are colorful Most varieties are white
Produces scapes as a secondary crop
Each variety of hardneck garlic can taste vastly different than another. The taste also can change wildly depending on how they are prepared for eating. We are currently growing eight different varieties at our farm. One of our goals in trying the different varieties is to educate ourselves and our customers as to the differences that exist between the flavors of the varieties and determine how to best use each variety during meal preparation.
As the growing season begins and moves along, we will update the story of the crop of the year to include more information on varieties, growing tips, our practices, recipes, storage, and the results of any taste testing experiments we conduct. Until then, here is what our first year crop looked like:
